Knotting as a craft has been practised for millennia, and it therefore has a great history behind it. It was particularly sailors who would use the craft as a pastime while sailing around the world ocean. They would then later sell their creations when they came ashore.
Today, anyone who is interested can learn how to knot. It is a fun and entertaining hobby that allows you to create beautiful creations such as jewellery, purses, wall hangings and much more. You are only limited by your imagination.
Macramé
Macramé is the knotting technique that is often used for making beautiful, knotted wall hangings. The difficulty level for macramé depends on the type of knots you are tying. You can create some lovely creations by simply using a few basic knots, but you can also experiment with some of the more advanced knots.
If you want to embark on a knotting project using the macramé technique, then it is often a good idea to use a slightly thicker cord than what you would use to make e.g. a bracelet, as a wall hanging is much larger, and the cords will therefore look too thin if you do not choose a thicker type of cord.
Main materials for knotting
Knotting basically only requires that you have a piece of cord/string. In our webshop, we offer a large variety of cords for knotting. This type of cord is mainly thick and soft, as it is made specifically for the craft. However, it is also possible to get other types of cords, such as satin string or paracord.
Although in principle you only need to use cord for knotting, you can also get a large number of other materials for your knotting project. You can for example use beads, stones, keychains, wooden sticks and charms, which can add a beautiful and unique touch to your designs.
To make the knotting a little easier, you can also find a large number of auxiliary tools at our webshop. You can e.g. find patterns, braiding stars and forks, knotting boards and much more.
The most commonly used knotting techniques
There are several different techniques within the craft of knotting, which vary a lot in the level of difficulty. Whether you are a beginner or more advanced, here is a quick guide to some of the most well-known knotting techniques.
Knotting for beginners
When trying something new, it is always a good idea to start with a simple pattern. For knotting, that could be a pendant to a keychain or bracelet.
At our webshop, you will find many different types of cord, which can help you get a good start on your first knotting project.
Kumihimo
Kumihimo is a Japanese braiding technique, which also varies greatly in the level of difficulty depending on what you want to create. It is a really fun technique, for which you need to use a Kumihimo braiding disc. This disc allows you to twist the cords as you go, which helps to create some very beautiful designs.
Because you can create some very thin and fine cords, the Kumihimo technique is ideal for making jewellery, such as a bracelet or something similar.
