What is linen?
Linen is a type of natural linen fabric made from the fibers from the stem of the beautiful blue flax flower. Most people know linen from the lightweight, comfortable summer pants that are in fashion every year and that just get more and more comfortable the more you wear them.
We have linen in a beautiful woven quality that can be used for everything from cushions and curtains to dresses and pants. Linen textile has many advantages, which is why you'll always find a large selection of linen fabrics on this site.
What are the benefits of linen fabric?
When you choose linen for your projects, you get a material that is 100% natural and therefore very lively to work with. It's important that you wash your fabric before sewing with it, as linen will shrink in the wash.
One of the many benefits of linen fabric - whether you choose expensive or cheap linen fabric - is the smooth surface with a slight shine that makes it look exclusive and beautiful. The fabric yields and softens as you use the garment you sew from it, but when washed, it contracts to its original shape.
In use, linen is an extremely comfortable material, especially in the summer heat, where it has a tempering quality similar to silk. We love to sew light, feminine summer dresses in linen because the fabric is both light and comfortable and has a very elegant drape.
With us, you'll find linen fabric called flax. It's a blend of linen and cotton that combines the many properties of the two fibers to create a material that is elegant, lightweight and durable - and less wrinkled than pure linen.
How do you wash linen fabric?
Pure linen can be washed at high temperatures without damage, making it a popular choice for those who want to create tablecloths and other items with a more rustic look. We have a large selection of our take on a beautiful linen fabric - linen which, due to its cotton content, should not be washed at higher than a maximum of 40 and preferably 30 degrees.
Before the first wash
Before washing your linen fabric for the first time, we recommend soaking it in cold water mixed with a generous splash of vinegar for 24 hours. This softens the fabric and binds the color so that the fabric doesn't rub off or fade too quickly. If you are sewing tea towels from the fabric, the soaking also helps the fabric absorb and dry better.
Washing linen
After soaking, it's a good idea to machine wash the fabric at 30 degrees - which is the temperature we recommend for this quality. The low temperature is both good for the durability of the fabric and for the environment - which is why we love linen here at Rito.dk
Drying linen
You should always avoid putting linen in the dryer because it is extremely hard on the fibers. Let it hang dry, but avoid direct sunlight as it will bleach and darken the fabric. Linen is a natural fiber that dries quickly because it is so light and fine. The linen-cotton blend takes a little longer, but dries faster than pure cotton.
What can you sew with linen?
As you might have guessed, we love linen and there's virtually no limit to what you can sew with this beautiful fabric. Some of the things that are truly delicious and luxurious are:
Tea towels and guest towels
Once you've soaked the fabric, it will become much more absorbent and therefore ideal for both tea towels and guest towels. Combined with the shorter drying time, you have the perfect recipe for a practical material in both the kitchen and bathroom.
Cushions
Whether plain, patchwork or whatever else you can come up with, linen is a beautiful choice if you want beautiful, exclusive-looking cushions that are also comfortable to rest your head on for a nap on the sofa. The beautiful, bright colors can brighten up any living room.
Bedding
The vast majority of our bedding is made from pure cotton, but if you want to treat yourself - or someone else - to some extra special bedding, linen/cotton from our range is a great choice. It's soft, lightweight and tempering to lie in. You're sure to use it again and again.
Clothing
Linen is a great material for clothing. You can sew everything from pants and skirts to dresses, tops and jackets. The only limit is your imagination, and with linen you get the perfect blend of comfort and elegance.
Curtains
Linen is also a beautiful material if you want to make curtains that do more than just keep out prying eyes. The lightweight, beautiful fabric is perfect for long ceiling-to-floor curtains that bring life and beauty to a room. They let the sun shine through, but provide shade so you can be left alone.
Things to know about linen
Linen is a wonderful material to work with, but it also has a tendency to fray if you don't pay attention to overlocking or zigzagging the edges. Securing the edges with stitching also helps to ensure that your stitching doesn't slip when you wear your pants or your favorite cushion on the couch.
