It can be confusing to find your way around the many different qualities, categories and colours. Most people get the hang of it quickly though, but as a new knitter or crocheter, it sometimes takes a little help to find just the right yarn for the project you're dreaming of.
We have a huge range of different yarns, so you can always find the right one for your project. To make choosing the right one easier, we've divided the yarns into different categories so you can choose the one that makes the most sense for you:
- By knitting weight
- By manufacturer
- By quality
This allows you to quickly and easily get an overview of your options, whether it's a particular manufacturer you prefer, whether you're looking for yarn for a specific model, or whether you're looking for one quality over others.
What is 5-ply yarn?
There are lots of different names for a yarn's knitting tenacity, and a 5-thread yarn falls into the category also known as:
- Baby yarn
- Sports yarn
It can be a little confusing if you have to order yarn based on this designation from abroad, because here it is called a 4 ply yarn. However, these are two designations for the same type of yarn.
A 5-ply yarn is in one of the middle categories when it comes to knitting tension and running length. That means it's a very popular yarn - whether it's a cotton yarn, wool yarn or something else entirely.
5 thread cotton yarn
This category is extremely popular for those who love to knit things for the home. Like the 4-thread cotton, it's an obvious choice for home knitting or crocheting - especially things like towels, washcloths, dishcloths, cotton rounds and the like. The yarn is suitably thin and soft to make items that are absorbent and dry quickly enough to be practical - and comes in a rainbow of colours to suit any home.
These lovely knits have become popular because they are environmentally friendly and climate conscious. At the same time, not only are they great to have in your own home, they also make cute and thoughtful gifts for the hostess or family when you visit.
5 thread wool yarn
Like the cotton version of the 5-thread yarn, the wool version is also extremely popular. As you can almost guess from the name 'baby yarn', it's a perfect choice for baby clothes and accessories because it's often soft and the thin quality, suitable for needle size 3-4 and has a running length of 300-400 metres per 50g, is light enough to be comfortable even for the littlest ones.
In this category you will not only find pure wool yarn, but also a number of delicious wool varieties such as:
- 100% Alpaca
- Alpaca / Silk
- Merino wool
Giving you the possibility to knit the same model with completely different looks, depending on the quality you choose.
The advantage of knitting clothing in wool is that the wool in all its variations has a number of great properties that suit both adults and children. Wool is tempering, making it a great choice for both summer and winter, it is absorbent and can soak up to 30% of its weight - without making you cold. In other words, it's a fibre that's perfect for both small sweaters and suits for babies and stylish hats, sweaters or socks for adults.
