Giraffe Rattles

You can make these lovely giraffe rattles if you follow the instructions below. The rattles can be crocheted with or without the wooden ring, and you are provided with both options with this pattern instruction. In the head of the giraffe, a small rattlebox or bell is hidden, which provides the rattling sound that makes the toy interesting to the little ones. The rattles are made in the nice and soft cotton yarn Infinity Hearts Rose 8/4.

Measurement: Approx. 16 x 10cm including the ears - the measurements can vary by a few centimetres depending on whether you use the wooden ring or not.

Material: Infinity Hearts Rose 8/4

Yarn usage:

  • Colour 190 Mustard: approx. 17 g
  • Colour 228 Dark Brown: approx. 1 g

Other materials: 

Crochet hook: 3,00 mm

Instructions

Head

1. 6 dc in magic ring (6)

2. 2 dc in all stitches (12)

3. *1 dc, 2 dc in next stitch* x 6 (18)

4. * 2 dc, 2 dc in next stitch* x 6 (24)

5. *3 dc, 2 dc in next stitch* x 6 (30)

6. *4 dc, 2 dc in next stitch * x 6 (36)

7. *5 dc, dc in next stitch * x 6 (42)

8 - 16. dc in all stitches (42)

17. *5 dc, 2 dc together* x 6 (36)

18. *4 dc, 2 dc together* x 6 (30)

19. *3 dc, 2 dc together* x 6 (24)

20. *2 dc, 2 dc together* x 6 (18)

Stuff the head and insert the rattlebox.

21. *1 dc, 2 dc together* x 6 (12)

22. 2 dc together x 6 (6)

Fasten off and leave a piece of yarn for fitting.

Tip: You will create a better-looking colour change if the last stitch (regardless of the type of stitch) is made in the new colour.

Ossicones: make 2.

Start in brown.

1. 6 dc in magic ring (6)

2. 2 dc in all stitches (12)

3. *2 dc, 2 dc in next stitch* x 4 (16)

4 - 5. dc in all stitches (16)

6. *2 dc, 2 dc together* x 4 (12)

7. *1 dc, 2 dc together* x 4 (8)

Change to yellow

8 - 12. dc in all stitches (8)

Fasten off and insert wadding material. Leave a piece of yarn for fitting. Make one more just like this.

 

Ear: make 2.

1. 6 dc in magic ring (6)

2. Dc in all stitches (6)

3. *1 dc, 2 dc in next stitch* x 3 (9)

4. Dc in all stitches (9)

5. *2 dc, 2 dc in next stitch* x 3 (12)

6 - 8. Dc in all stitches (12)

9. *2 dc, 2 dc together* x 3 (9)

10. *1 dc, 2 dc together* x3 (6)

Fasten off. Leave a piece of yarn for fitting. Make one more just like this.

 

Muzzle

Crochet around the chain stitch.

1. 6 ch, start in 2nd stitch from the hook. 4 dc, 3 dc in next stitch, 3 dc, 4 dc in next stitch (14)

2. 5 dc, 2 dc in the next 2 stitches, 5 dc, 2 dc in the next 2 stitches (18)

3. 7 dc, 2 dc in the next 2 stitches, 7 dc, 2 dc in the next 2 stitches (22)

4 - 6. Dc in all stitches (22)

Fasten off and insert wadding. Leave a piece of yarn for fitting.

 

Outer ring A – only make this if you make the rattle with a wooden ring 70 mm. Otherwise, skip this step.

Crochet back and forth, turn with 1 ch.

1. 11 ch turn.

Start in 2nd from the hook.

2. 10 dc, 1 ch turn (10)

3 - 22. Dc in all stitches, 1 ch turn.

Fasten off and leave a piece of yarn for fitting.

Outer ring B - only make this if you make the rattle without a wooden ring. Otherwise, skip this step.

Round crochet.

1. 14 ch, create a ring with a sl st (14)

2 - 22. Dc in all stitches (14)

Fasten off and close.

 

Rattle ring – inner ring

Round crochet.

1. Make 12 ch, join the ring with a sl st (12)

2 - 42. Dc in all stitches (12)

Close off. Leave a piece of yarn for sewing the ring together.

Pull the outer ring over the inner ring out. Stuff the rattle ring and sew it together.

The outer ring is pulled over the seam for a nicer finish.

Fitting

Sew the head on the middle of the outer ring.

Sew the muzzle om between rd. 11 - 17.

Sew the ears on between rd. 7 - 10 approx. right on the middle of the head.

Sew the ossicones on between the ears, around rd. 3 - 4.

Embroider brown spots around the rattle ring.

Embroider the eyes, with black. Around rd. 9, with approx. 8 stitches between.

Embroider nostrils onto the muzzle, with brown.

(Only for rattle made with wooden ring). Sew the piece around the wooden ring.
