What is OEKO-TEX?

If you want to make sure that your textiles, yarns, and clothes do not contain harmful chemicals, you can look for products that are OEKO-TEX certified. If you also prioritize production conditions and sustainability, you can take a look at OEKO-TEX. It is a trademark with a number of different certifications attached to it, so that you, as a consumer, can always trust the products you purchase. For example, if you are crocheting a soft toy for a baby, it is almost guaranteed that the baby will put the toy in its mouth. It is therefore a good idea to look for yarn with no harmful chemicals.

Be mindful of the textiles and yarn for your hobby projects

Chemicals used for clothing production can still be on the textiles and yarns when you buy them. These chemicals can be allergenic or, in the worst case, carcinogenic. The chemicals can be transferred to the body by contact with the skin, by inhaling gases or ingestion by, for example, sucking on the clothes. Moreover, the long-term effects on young children exposed to these chemicals remain unknown.

Before products can become Standard 100 OEKO-TEX certified, they must comply with a set of strict requirements that go beyond those set by legislation both in the EU, and within the UK. All individual parts down to the smallest detail have been tested for harmful substances. Today, many yarn qualities and textiles are Standard 100 OEKO-TEX certified, so you can easily find a product that suits your preferences.

Much more than just awareness of harmful chemicals

OEKO-TEX has more certifications than Standard 100 attached to it. You can also find products with credentials that specify whether the product is socially sustainable, environmentally friendly or produced under safe conditions. If you want to be sure that your yarn or textiles are produced with the environment in mind, you can look at STeP by OEKO-TEX. This certification guarantees that the product is produced under proper working conditions with good and safe handling of chemicals and much more. There are several certifications that focus on sustainability, social responsibility, etc., so you can always find a certification to make you feel ensured as a consumer.
