Crochet Tension

It is important to make a crochet sample to ensure that you get the right crochet tension, as the sizes might not match the stated measurements! 10x10cm: 26tr x 14rw.

Abbreviations

mr: magic ring

ch: chain stitch

dc: double crochet

sl st: slip stitch

tr: treble

tr-inc: treble-increase (2 tr in the same)

rnd: round (spiral crochet)

rw: row (crochet back and forth)

** x (a number) means that you should repeat from * to * the stated number of times

(x) the number of stitches after the round/row is finished.

Before you begin

It may be a good idea to measure the head circumference of the person you are making the hat for. You measure it around the head just around the ears, so not around the forehead and down around the back of your neck, but a more "straight line" around.

You should therefore pay more attention to the measurements for head circumference than the age in the stated sizes.

REMEMBER to measure your crochet tension, so that your yarn and needle match the crochet tension, if you want to be sure that the hat size fits the specified measurements. It is most essential that the width matches, as you can always make the hat shorter or longer.

Instructions

The hat is crocheted from the top down. When you reach the part where you are simply adding length to the hat, you can always choose to stop if you want it shorter. This will of course alter the amount of yarn you will be using. The hat will look quite large, but once the edge is made, it will become smaller.

If you want to make your Santa hat more unique, you can either make all the tr in blo, or you could choose to make it striped. You are only limited by your imagination!

NOTE!

You start each round with 2 ch which DO NOT count as a stitch.

For each round, alternate between making either a tr in the same stitch as ch in the beginning (your sl st) or at the end, so the line becomes more even.

hæklede til og fra kort

This is what it looks like when you begin in the same stitch as ch. You do this every other round, and the on other round you skip this stitch and crochet tr all the way around and then mark your tr in this stitch at the end (so the opposite side of ch).

You finish each round by making an sl st in the first tr.

1st rnd: 12 tr in a mr (12) – perhaps, get an extra-long thread for sewing a button for the tassel or to attach the tassel directly on your hat.

2nd rnd: *tr-inc, 1 tr* x6 (18)

Hat length:

Now, you make the hat long. The stated rounds will make a hat with the form and length shown in the pictures. You can always choose to make either more or fewer rounds if you want to make the hat longer or shorter.

Size 0-3 mos:

Make 30 rounds med 1 tr in each, start each round med 2 ch and alternate between making either a tr in the same stitch as ch in the start or at the end for each round, so the line becomes more even. Proceed to the ‘edge’.

Size 3-6 mos:

Make 34 rounds with 1 tr in each, start each round med 2 ch and alternate between making either a tr in the same stitch as ch in the start or at the end for each round, so the line becomes more even. Proceed to the ‘edge’.

Size 6-12 mos:

Make 38 rounds med 1 tr in each, start each round med 2 ch and alternate between making either a tr in the same stitch as ch in the start or at the end for each round, so the line becomes more even. Proceed to the ‘edge’.

Size 1-5 yrs:

Make 42 rounds med 1 tr in each, start each round med 2 ch and alternate between making either a tr in the same stitch as ch in the start or at the end for each round, so the line becomes more even. Proceed to the ‘edge’.

Size 5 yrs+:

Make 46 rounds with 1 tr in each, start each round with 2 ch and alternate between making either a tr in the same stitch as ch in the start or at the end for each round, so the line becomes more even. Proceed to the ‘edge’.

Size Adult:

Make 50 rounds with 1 tr in each, start each round with 2 ch and alternate between making either a tr in the same stitch as ch in the start or at the end for each round, so the line becomes more even. Proceed to the ‘edge’.

The edge:

You now make the egde of the hat by crocheting back and forth in rows with dc in blo.

You begin by casting on ch, you can, of course, always cast on fewer or more, if you want the edge to be narrower or broader.

Size 0-3 mos: Start with 8 ch

Size 3-6 mos: Start with 8 ch

Size 6-12 mos: Start with 10 ch

Size 1-5 yrs: Start with 10 ch

Size 5 yrs+: Start with 12 ch

Size Adult: Start with 14 ch

Now, do the following for all sizes:

1. rw: Start in the 2nd ch from the hook and make 7 (7) 9 (9) 11 (13) dc in the ch-row, then make 3 dc on the edge, where you start in the stitch after the one where you have cast on ch.

2. rw: turn, skip the 3 dc on the edge and make 7 (7) 9 (9) 11 (13) dc in blo

3. rw: turn with 1 ch, 7 (7) 9 (9) 11 (13) dc in blo, 3 dc on the edge

Repeat 2nd rw and 3rd rw until you reach the first ch. Now crochet the edge joined with dc (or possibly sew it joined)

Attach your tassel at the top.
