Free Crochet Pattern: Toy Christmas Elf

You crochet the elf from the bottom and up and add stuffing. You can change the colours according to your personal preference. The pattern is made after a striped suit in Infinity Hearts Rose 8/4, which consists of 100% cotton.

Measurements

The Christmas elf measures approx. 8cm depending on your crochet tension.

Materials

• Crochet hook size 3.00mm (you can choose a bigger or a smaller needle depending on the crochet tension)
• Darning needle for weaving in ends
• Stuffing

Yarn consumption

Infinity Hearts Rose 8/4 in the colours:

Colour A: 24 Bordeaux (approx. 10 grams) (the colour of the hat and the Christmas elf clothes) 

Colour B: 241 Petrol Green (approx. 5 grams) (stripes) 

Colour C: 172 Off White (just a small left over amount) (beard) 

Colour D: 205 Light Peach, alternatively another skin colour (you just need a small amount of yarn for two rounds)  

Abbreviations

dc = double crochet

inc = increase

dec = decrease

sl st = slip stitch

Technical explanation

Bobble stitch:

Crochet a bobble stitch by making 3 unfinished treble stitches in one stitch. Yarn over needle and insert into the stitch, yarn over needle and bring it back. You now have three stitches on the needle, yarn over needle and pull it through the first two of the stitches on the needle so you now have 2 stitches left on the needle. Repeat this two more times in the same stitch (on the Christmas elf), you now have 5 stitches on the needle. Yarn over and pull through all 5. Make sure the bubble is on the outside so that the nose is visible on the Christmas elf.

Rnd 2: inc in all stitches (12)

Rnd 3: (1 dc, inc in the next stitch) repeat 6 times (18)

Rnd 4: (2 dc, inc in the next stitch) repeat 6 times (24)

Rnd 5: (3 dc, inc in the next stitch) repeat 6 times (30)

Rnd 6: (4 dc, inc in the next stitch) repeat 6 times (36)

Rnd 7: dc in all stitches (36)

Change to colour B (green)

Rnd 8: (10 dc, 1 dec) repeat 3 times (33)

Change to colour A

Rnd 9: dc in all stitches (33)

Change to colour B

Rnd 10: (9 dc, 1 dec) repeat 3 times (30)

Change to colour A

Rnd 11: dc in all stitches (30)

Change to colour C (white)

Rnd 12: (8 dc, 1 dec) repeat 3 times (27)

Rnd 13: dc in all stitches (27)

Rnd 14: (7 dc, 1 dec) repeat 3 times (24)

Change to colour D (light peach)

Rnd 15: 12 dc, 1 bobble stitch, 11 dc (24)

Rnd 16: (6 dc, 1 dec) repeat 3 times (21)

Change to colour A

Rnd 17: dc in all stitches (21)

Rnd 18: (5 dc, 1 dec) repeat 3 times (18)

Rnd 19: dc in all stitches (18)

Add filling to your Christmas elf.

Rnd 20: (4 dc, 1 dec) repeat 3 times (15)

Rnd 21: dc in all stitches (15)

Rnd 22: (3 dc, 1 dec) repeat 3 times (12)

Rnd 23: dc in all stitches (12)

Rnd 24: (2 dc, 1 dec) repeat 3 times (9)

Rnd 25: dc in all stitches (9)

Finish stuffing the Christmas elf with.

Rnd 26: (1 dc, 1 dec) repeat 3 times (6)

Rnd 27: 1 dec.

Leave the rest of the stitches uncrocheted. Make a sl st across the opening, pull the yarn strand halfway through and tie a knot (this is the strand for hanging).
