What is fabric yarn?

Fabric yarn is a specific type of yarn that can be used to create a somewhat thicker and stronger type of knit or crochet. As the name suggests, it is made of fabric - usually leftovers from textile productions. Fabric yarn often gives you a strong and solid result, which can be really practical in many creative projects.

Since fabric yarn is quite thick, keep in mind that you will usually need to use a larger size knitting needle or crochet hook when working with this type of yarn. You will often need a needle size between 6mm and 10mm, but in some cases, you will also need them to be thicker.

The thick texture of the fabric yarn can make it a little hard to work with, so it can be a good idea to practise a little before you begin to experiment with fabric yarn on larger projects.

How to use fabric yarn

Since fabric yarn tends to create strong and sturdy knit or crochet items, it is not the type of yarn that you should go for if you want to make clothes. It would result in some very stiff clothes that would be really difficult to move around properly.

Fabric yarn is, on the other hand, perfect for making home accessories or decor. You can e.g. use it to make baskets, blankets, pillows, pouffes, placemats, potholders, purses, bags and much more, as the rigid, strong quality of the yarn is able to ensure that these items keep their shape.
