What is crayon?

We usually distinguish between what are called crayons and what are called oil pastels by looking at the hardness and intensity of the color they leave on the paper.

Oil pastels

This type of chalk is the classic form of crayon we know from kindergartens and schools. They are hard and provide the same color intensity as a crayon - the advantage is that they don't smudge or smear on fingers, clothes and tables.

Oil pastels

These inks are characterized by being very soft and produce a high-intensity colour on the paper. This is often the type of paint used by professionals and older children. There are different crayon techniques that can be used to vary the look of the finished work.

Is there a difference between crayons for children and adults?

Basically, both children and adults can enjoy both types of crayons, but if you're sensitive about your dining table and your kid's sweaters, hard crayons are definitely the best option for the little ones.

Conversely, if you're painting with crayons on canvas, it's often more effective to choose the softer colors, which can be used alone or in combination with different types of paint to create depth and texture in the painting. Conversely, hard chalks are also really exciting to explore for those interested in watercolor crayons, where a combination of paint and chalk can bring images to life.

If you have a oilcloth and an apron for the little ones, there are also many hours of fun to be had with soft oil pastels. For example, try coloring a piece of paper and painting over it with the black chalk. Now, with a needle or something sharp, you can scratch drawings into the black layer and reveal the beautiful colors underneath - a kind of reverse drawing.

Ideas for creative projects with crayons

You can do many fun things with your crayons - both as an adult or as a creative activity with children. Drawing and exploring colors and shapes is always exciting, and with this particular type of crayon, we think there are many more exciting ways to do it.

Paint with oil

If you've chosen the soft chalks, you can get much more out of the color and soften both the shapes and transitions by using them with oil. Once your drawing is complete, you can simply dip a finger in oil and use it to rub out the color for a smoother, more organic surface.

Color theory is one of the true wonders that can mesmerize the youngest and open up a whole new world of possibilities for them. You can do it with both hard and soft crayons - depending on what you have in stock. The game can be developed as an investigation that starts with a simple question, such as 'what do you do if there is no green crayon?

Melt your crayons

With soft crayons, it can be tempting to throw away the leftovers when they get too small to hold, but don't do that, you can easily get more out of them by melting them either in a water bath or by laying them on a canvas in a beautiful pattern and melting them with your blow dryer. It's a fun and different technique that produces fun results and the color can easily be pulled out with a spatula once it's heated through.
