The shape of the snaps is stars, but the round back can also be used visibly. So you can use both the round and star shaped parts. Fitting

The snap fasteners will only fit together properly once they have been pressed firmly with the pliers. It is not enough to press them together with your hands. Now you press them all together with the pliers. Just make sure the parts fit correctly in the pliers, otherwise they can be pressed together askew.
