What is bias tape?
True to its name, bias tape is just tape cut from bias pieces of fabric. By cutting the fabric diagonally rather than horizontally or vertically, you get far greater stretch and the ability to shape the tape. This way you can sew edges on both the long straight sides, but also create nice rounded corners where the tape lies neatly all the way around.
How to sew on bias tape?
To create the best-looking finish, stitch the tape twice. This will ensure that the seams sit straight and that the tape covers any frayed or sewn edges.
When you buy bias tape, it's not like regular satin ribbon or similar. It's folded so no raw edges are visible once you've sewn it on properly. This gives you a distinct advantage when sewing the tape onto your work. In a nutshell, here's what you do:
- Make sure the edges you'll be sewing ribbon on are trimmed and nicely straight. It gives a better result
- Unfold one side of the ribbon and lay it along the back of the piece edge to edge
- Make a stitch in the fold that is visible on your ribbon all the way around
- Make sure the ends are sewn together and folded out when you sew over the joint
- Now fold the tape so that both sides are folded in again and your stitching is just in the one fold on the back
- Fold the tape over on the front side and tighten it so that the tape is 0,1 cm over the stitching from the back side stitching
- Now make a stitch about 0.1 mm inside the tape, making sure to tighten it and keep the folded edge 0.1 mm inside the stitch.
Sewing on bias tape is mostly about precision, because the more accurate you are with your stitching, the better the result will be too.
