There are so many clothes on the racks in stores or online. It quickly becomes the case that we all wear the same clothes because we shop in the same stores. It can also be difficult to find clothes that fit your body shape because one-size-fits-all sizes are not always one-size-fits-all in the end.
That's why it's a good idea to sew your own clothes. It's fun to find the right fabric, pattern and thread, and it's always a good idea to buy a good hemming elastic to sew edges on your clothes.
What is a hemming elastic?
A folded elastic is a type of elastic that has a groove in the middle of the band. The groove allows the band to be folded in half so that it can be folded around the edge of a piece of fabric.
The ribbon is especially useful for sewing the neckline of a blouse or dress, as it often has a soft curve that can be difficult to sew neatly. You will therefore get a nicer finish on your blouse if you use an elastic band for the neckline, which is one of the first things you see when you put on your shirt.
Fold-over elastic with tongue edge
Elastic bands are available with what is called a tongue edge or with tongues. The tongues are the small curves that can be on the edge of the band, which gives a beautiful lace effect.
Folded elastic - how to use it?
As mentioned above, elastic is used to create beautiful edges on your home sewn garments. It works best with a good sewing machine, but can also be sewn on by hand if necessary.
However, sewing it on by machine gives the best results and is much faster. On the machine, you can more easily give it the slight stretch needed to make the ribbon curve nicely along the edge. Therefore, it's also important to familiarize yourself with how to use the elastic properly so that the edges of the garment are carefully rounded.
Before you sew
When attaching the folded elastic to the neckline, it's important to start with one shoulder seam of the blouse open so you can close the elastic on that side. It's also good for you if it's freshly ironed, so that both the fabric and seams lie neatly between the tape.
Next, make sure that the widest side of the band is placed on the back of the fabric. In other words, on the inside of the blouse. In addition, the tape usually has two sides, one of which is glossy and possibly with a nice pattern, and the other is matte. Therefore, you can choose which way the tape faces and what finish you want the blouse to have.
Sew the ribbon elastic
Once you are well prepared, fold the elastic around your edge and place it on the machine. Sew the end to one side of the open shoulder seam and pull the elastic slightly as you slowly sew it in place a few centimeters at a time.
