Shrovetide was originally a tradition of carnies in the old days, who rode through the village from farm to farm, where they were given a dram. Then they'd all meet up at the street weir and beat the crap out of each other. But even back then you dressed up and scared others, nowadays though it's quieter and mostly children who keep to the tradition. More and more, however, company parties are having themed parties where people dress up and paint their faces.
