If you're a sewing machine enthusiast or a fan of patchwork and quilting, you're bound to be familiar with textile adhesives. It's a pretty much indispensable tool if you want to avoid having pins all over the house, but also can't keep track of fabric without help.
As always, you'll find a huge range of different types of textile glue in different quantities, depending on what you're looking for. You'll also find a wide range of exciting products to use with the glue if you're looking for new creative projects.
What is textile glue?
Textile glue is glue designed for use on textiles - in other words, fabric glue. There are two main types, each with specific properties that make them suitable for different purposes.
Water-soluble textile adhesives
If you need to glue something together to make sure that two pieces don't move or get out of place while you're sewing into them, the water-soluble textile glue is the best choice.
You can put it on the fabric to hold it together and throw it in the washing machine and the glue will dissolve and disappear. For many, the best textile glue in this category would be a glue stick that puts the glue in a thin line - like a marker where you need it.
Waterproof textile glue
Unlike the water-soluble variety, this kind of glue for fabric is made to last. This means that, in principle, you don't need to get out your sewing machine if you have a tube like this to hand. It's great to use for minor damage or holes in places that are hard to reach with a machine - or as extra insurance in your bag in case a nail suddenly falls out.
Where to use textile glue?
Textile glue is basically used to hold two pieces of fabric together - permanently or temporarily. If you need a fun project for the little ones, glue is great to use when working with felt and yarn to make projects last a little longer and be more sophisticated.
For example, Easter chicks with a delicate pom pom for a tail are an obvious use for textile glue rather than needle and thread. This means it's easier for little ones to join in all the way.
Similarly, if you've got a tube of clothes glue in your bag, you can stuff so-called 'runners' into your socks or glue a hole pocket together while you're on the move. It can quickly become indispensable once you get used to the tube being there.
The water-soluble variety is also great if you do patchwork or like to quilt larger projects like jackets or bags. If you use the pen with colour, you can even mark your stitches with glue that disappears in the wash.
In other words, there's virtually no reason not to have textile glue in your creative toolbox if you enjoy working with fabric and yarn.
