Here you'll find everything you need to make beautiful glass and decorative porcelain pieces. Because we at Rito.dk want to offer you as versatile a range as possible when it comes to creative hobbies, you will of course also find porcelain and glass paints in all colours and price ranges.
What is porcelain paint?
If you've tried to paint on porcelain or other similar smooth surfaces, you've almost certainly found that ordinary paint doesn't stick to them and will therefore peel off pretty much before it's applied. That's because many familiar paints, like acrylic or oil paints, don't have the right composition and can't harden enough to adhere to porcelain or glass.
Instead, choosing a paint specially formulated for this type of surface will give you a beautiful, even and durable result that you can enjoy for years to come.
What can you do with glass and porcelain paints?
This form of creativity is one that is great fun for adults and children alike. Not only is it an obvious gift idea where the little ones can paint a nice cup for grandparents or parents, it's also a really fun activity to do up to the winter holidays.
Some of the beautiful, crazy and spooky things you can make are:
- Lanterns for outdoor use with Christmas or Halloween motifs
- Cute candle holders for all occasions
- Porcelain cups or bowls for small snacks and treats
- Glass or porcelain urns or ornaments
We stock a wide range of glass and porcelain paints in opaque, transparent and metallic colours, so you can get exactly the mood and look you want.
Paint on glass and porcelain alone or with children and grandchildren if you want to create works of art that last longer and can become both fond memories and lovely gifts.
Inspiration for porcelain painting projects
Both classic gifts and more seasonal and festive decorations are perfect for glass or porcelain painting. For very little money, you can make both beautiful and impactful decorations that make any occasion even more special. Below are our top tips for fun projects with glass or porcelain paint.
Cups or bowls
It's a classic, but there's hardly a grandparent or parent who wouldn't get a tear in the corner of their eye from opening a gift with a cup or bowl decorated by their (grand)child. It's sure to become a favourite - and both giver and receiver will find joy every time the gift is put to use.
Lanterns for Christmas or Halloween
Danes have really embraced the American Halloween tradition over the past few years, and it's also a holiday that really lends itself to spooky decorations both inside and out. Lanterns are an obvious choice here, and it's a fun project for adults and children alike. Paint different jars from jam, beets or whatever you have with different, wonderful Halloween motifs and hang or display them outside.
You could usefully use battery-operated candles in these and put lids on, so they last longer and create a lovely atmosphere.
Good classic Easter eggs
Use these beautiful porcelain eggs year after year as Easter approaches. They can be decorated with the paint and then hung on witch hazel branches along with felt chicks or beautifully carved paper spring flowers. It's Easter spirit at its best and you can find the same beautiful eggs year after year.
Flower pots look good with paint
Give those raw terracotta pots a gorgeous makeover and add life and warmth to windowsills and patios. You can paint on the pots whether they're glazed or not, but you'll get a more saturated colour if you choose a glazed model. With the paint, you can give your flower pots a wonderful makeover and have every windowsill filled with your favourite colours and patterns all year round.
The cute candle holders
Just like those lovely lanterns, glass candle holders can also be given a new lease of life with a coat of glass paint. Use either old or new candle holders, or go hunting for pretty little glasses to decorate and create the backdrop for little still lifes with electric candles in pretty, hand-painted candle holders.
How do you use porcelain paint?
When applying paint to glass, use a paintbrush, just like when you use regular watercolour or acrylic paint.
Once you've finished painting, all the pieces need to be left to dry for about 24 hours - read the information on the different products to be sure - and then they need a porcelain paint firing. This is done in a conventional oven at around 160°for about 30 minutes, after which they need to cool completely before being used.
The advantage of both expensive and cheap glass paint is that the finished artworks can go in the dishwasher on low heat.
