There's something fragile and delicate about painting on silk, and it's a hobby that has roots far back in time but is still popular today. The beautiful colours can be diluted to your liking, giving you a more or less bright result depending on your preference.
Silk painting isn't one of the hobbies topping the popularity charts these days, but it's still a really exciting and enjoyable art form to take up if you need something extra to do or have run out of ideas for homemade Christmas presents for the kids. The only limit is your imagination.
How do you make silk paint?
Once you've decided to try out silk painting, it's really just a case of getting started. It doesn't require much in the way of tools or preparation, so it's a manageable hobby to try even if you've never tried it before. What you'll need is:
- Water
- Brushes
- Paints
- Scarf/tie or similar
- Ironing board and iron
Choose the textile you'd like to paint on, draw a small sketch if you like with a crayon or chalk from the sewing box, and get started. The colours work in the same way as watercolours and watercolour, so expect them to flow a little and they can be difficult to control until you find your rhythm.
When you're done painting, heat set the colours by brushing the fabric you've painted on at the highest heat it can tolerate. That way, you'll make sure the paint stays put - even if you wash it.
What can you paint with silk paint?
Despite being called silk paint, you can actually paint on a wide variety of textiles with some of the products in our range, so there are also a number of exciting options for making gifts, home items or to give some of the clothes in your wardrobe an update.
Silk painting is a great alternative if you want to give your children the opportunity to make gifts for those they love, but are short of ideas for something that can actually be used. It's fun for the kids, and pot holders, tea towels, scarves or ties with little drawings are guaranteed to bring many smiles to the recipient every time they're brought out too.
Accessories for silk painting
You won't need many accessories when painting with silk paint, but it's a good idea to make sure you have everything in place before you start. One of the most important things is to have the right brushes. Because it's a very thin paint, brushes for watercolour are an obvious choice, and they come in a wide range of thicknesses so you can vary the expression and strength of your strokes.
