There's always a wealth of yarn to choose from when you start thinking about a new project. For some, it's a pattern that goes straight onto the knitting list, while for others it might be a beautiful ball of yarn that just has to go home to the stash - even if it doesn't immediately fit what you're working on.
You'll always find a huge selection of yarns in every colour, quality and category. From the classic cotton yarn to the soft and chunky wool yarn that is all the rage on the knitting needles today.
What are 4-ply yarns?
If you have a particular project in mind when you browse the yarn selection here, it's relatively easy to narrow down the selection because there's usually a knitting gauge, a pint size and a yarn count you can start from.
A four-thread yarn will often be in one of the thinner categories, as opposed to the thicker 8-thread yarn. When a yarn is 4-ply, it simply means that the finished yarn in your ball is spun from four thinner strands. This is often done to give the yarn a smoother surface and greater strength, so it won't break when you work with it.
It can be confusing that a yarn referred to as 4 ply in English is called 3 ply, but that's how it works. If you find a 4 ply yarn instead, it will be 5 ply in English.
4 ply cotton yarn
If you've jumped on the wave of crocheted or knitted tea towels, dishcloths, cotton pads and washcloths, this is the category to look in. Here you will find the thinnest cotton quality with the longest running length. This means that you can usually get an entire dishcloth or washcloth out of a single ball, and that the cloth won't be too heavy and compact to be practical.
If you are more into small knitted and crocheted shapes, this quality will also usually be the one given in the pattern. A 4-strand cotton yarn is often also referred to as:
- Baby yarn
- Sport weight / sports weight
It is usually knitted on needle size 2.5 - 3, depending on how tightly you knit or what knitting tension you need to achieve. The average knitting tension will be around 27-32 stitches on 10 cm.
4 thread count wool yarn
If you're an eagle at knitting socks, then you're definitely familiar with that particular 4-thread wool yarn. In this category you will find all the delicious and exciting sock yarns available in a wide range of colours - both solid and self-striping.
This thickness of yarn has also become incredibly popular for thin tops and light cardigans, because it is possible to knit it both alone or, for example, together with a thread of mohair/silk or similar to achieve a different knitting strength.
In this category you will also find a large selection of the most delicious wool yarns that are both beautiful to look at, wonderful to work with and feel fantastic against the skin. This gives you a myriad of options for using 4 thread wools or wool/cotton blends to build up your yarn stash or create the project you're planning.
