Freshwater pearls are a unique natural product
Pearls come in a myriad of shapes and colours because they are a natural product and therefore unique from pearl to pearl. You can get both freshwater and saltwater pearls, where the shells live in different environments. We sell beautiful cultured pearls, which are cultured freshwater pearls.
Freshwater pearls are even more varied in colour and shape than saltwater pearls. This is because the pearl in a freshwater mussel is created by inserting a piece of tissue from another mussel. The core is thus not solid and hard, making the pearl more unique in shape and colour. You will therefore get many different types of colours and shapes if you choose the beautiful freshwater pearls.
Many beautiful shades to choose from
Depending on your project, you can find freshwater pearls in many beautiful shades. Pearls naturally have slightly different colours because they are a natural product that the shell forms uniquely time after time. For example, the natural colours that pearls come in are:
- White
- Pink
- Pink
- Silver
- Gold
- Black.
But because freshwater pearls can be dyed, you can get pearls in all the colours of the rainbow.
Depending on your project, you can find freshwater pearls from the perfectly spherical to other shapes such as teardrop-shaped and asymmetrical pearls. The more round and "perfect" the pearl ends up, the more expensive it is. The price depends on the size, shape and purity of the uniquely shaped pearl.
How does the shell produce the pearl?
Pearls are a reaction that a mussel has to a foreign object inside its shell. In the past, pearls could not be grown, but in the 1800s, it was possible to break
the code. You deliberately put a foreign body inside a freshwater mussel, which responds by encapsulating the foreign body.
A single mussel can produce up to 50 pearls, but it takes between 2 and 5 years for the mussel to produce the pearls. Today, most freshwater pearls are grown on pearl farms in Asia, particularly in Japan, China and Thailand. However, the mussels are very demanding and the water must be perfectly clean for them to survive and produce the beautiful and sought-after pearls.
Take care of your pearls
It's important to care for your pearls so they retain their beautiful luster. Freshwater pearls should be worn often and worn against the skin. This helps the pearls retain the moisture that the porous pearl naturally requires to keep its luster. They are therefore also resistant to drying out or extreme temperature changes.
Make sure you don't put on things like hairspray or perfume after you've put your pearls around your neck. Freshwater pearls can absorb these products. If your freshwater pearls need washing, you can clean them in lukewarm water that has been boiled.
