Do you love knotting? Then you may already be familiar with the popular Japanese knotting technique, Kumihimo? Kumihimo is a traditional Japanese knotting technique that consists of gathering threads. In order to do this, you need to use a special plate, also known as a knotting disk. You can buy these plates in many different sizes and shapes, so you can achieve exactly the result you want.
By using Kumihimo knotting, you can, among other things, make:
- Necklaces
- Bracelets
- Various cords and ribbons that can be used for many different purposes.
Japanese knotting
Kumihimo means "threads gathered together" and is a Japanese knotting technique that dates back many years. Samurai used the knotted strings to decorate their horses and their own armor, among other things. Today, this type of Japanese knotting is used for key chains, jewelry, hair ornaments, watch straps and as a fastener on a haori jacket. In addition, this knotting technique is also used to close a kimono.
The result of this braiding method can be either round or flat cords, and it is possible to choose from a myriad of different color combinations and patterns. In fact, it's possible to braid with up to 24 different strands, if you can keep track of them.

How to choose the right knotting disc
In order to choose the right knotting disc for what you're tying, there are a few things you need to consider. These include, among other things:
- The result of your knotting cannot be larger than the hole in the center of your knotting plate. If you're tying a thick cord, then you should look for a plate with a large hole in the middle.
- What type of cord to use for braiding.
- Where the different notches on the edges of the knotting plate are located. These are the ones you use to arrive at your result.
- How many strings you need for your knot.
- Where to place the different colors in the knot.
- Whether you need to be able to rotate the knotting plate or keep it fixed in one position.
