How to make a pom pom

lav selv pompom

There are several different ways to make a pompom, and it's also a perfect opportunity to use some of your leftover yarn.

You can use the pom poms for many different things. Not only do the round pom poms look great on top of your knitted hat, but you can also make them for rugs, and jewellery or use them as colourful wall decor.

The pom poms can be made in different ways. We have listed three of them for you here:

The classic pom pom

The classic method requires no tools or special equipment. Just cut two circles of cardboard that fit the size of the pompom you want to make. Inside those circles, cut out a smaller circle so you now have a little wheel that you can twist your yarn around. Now wrap the yarn around them until the hole in the middle is filled out. Now carefully insert a pair of scissors along the outer edge and cut the yarn all the way around. Before removing the cardboard, tie a string around your pompom between the two pieces of cardboard and tie it tightly. Your pom pom is now ready for use. If you want to make it a little more 'fluffy’, you can steam it over a boiling pot or with a steam iron.

The modern pom-pom

The modern pom pom looks the same, but it is easier to make and you can reuse your equipment if you choose to invest in a pom pom maker. They are available in several different colours and work pretty much like the classic cardboard model. They are made of hard plastic, can be divided in the middle, are available in several different sizes and you can use it again and again.

The quick pom pom

If you need to make small, quick pompoms, then there is a really quick way to do it. All you need is a fork and your leftover yarn. Twist your yarn around the teeth of the fork until you have a strong bundle. Tie a string or a strand of yarn around the middle and cut up the ends. Now you have a lovely, small pom pom that is perfect for jewellery, ornaments etc.
