What is crochet tension?

hæklefasthed

If you are going to crochet by following a crochet pattern, it is really important that your stitches are the right size if you want to end up with the right measurements for your project. That is why crochet tension is important.

The crochet tension tells you how many stitches you need for 10 centimetres and, in some cases, how many rows you need to crochet to reach 10 centimetres. This way, you can be sure that your crochet project ends up having the right measurements and matches the ones stated in the crochet pattern you are following.

To achieve the right crochet tension, it is always a good idea to make a crochet sample by crocheting a square in the pattern you need and measuring how many stitches and rows you need to reach 10x10 centimetres. It might sometimes be necessary to switch to a larger or smaller needle to achieve the right crochet tension. The needle size stated in the patterns should mostly be viewed as 'guiding'.

The tension with which people crochet differs quite significantly, and the crochet sample is therefore necessary in order to end up with a satisfactory result - even though it might seem too time-consuming, it can save you many hours in the long run as well as a lot of unnecessary unravelling.
