What is modal fabric?

Modal fabric is a natural material and a type of Rayon, which is made from cellulose from beech trees. Rayon is a fibre made from various kinds of natural sources, such as wood or agricultural products that are regenerated. Another type of fabric, which is also a form of Rayon, is viscose.

Modal fabric was first produced back in the 1960s, and it was initially called 'Hochmodul 333', but has since been given the more simple name, 'modal'. The fabric became particularly popular in the 1990s, and the demand for modal fabric has been steadily increasing ever since.

You can use Modal fabric as it is, but mixed products with materials such as cotton or elastane have also become quite popular.

Micromodal

Micromodal is a particular type of modal fabric, which is produced with the finest cellulose fibres. Therefore, you might say that Micromodal is like a luxury version of regular modal fabric, as the very fine fibres make the fabric even softer than regularly found.

The many benefits of modal fabric

Modal can be used for everything from underwear and clothing to towels and bed linen. The material is used in great variation due to its many good properties and benefits.

Modal fabric is extremely soft, which makes it very comfortable for sewing clothes. Additionally, it is a breathable as well as quick-drying fabric, which are properties that are super practical in clothing.

Moreover, it is a relatively strong type of fabric. Modal fabric maintains its colour really well and it does not have a tendency to lose its shape or shrink in the wash.

Modal is the eco-friendly choice

Modal is the obvious choice if you want to sew sustainable clothes. Modal fabric is, as previously mentioned, a natural material, which is why its production is relatively gentle compared to synthetic fabric.

Modal fabric is also one of the most eco-friendly choices of the natural materials. The production of modal consumes less water than e.g. cotton production; in fact, the production of modal consumes between 10-20% less water compared to cotton.
