How to weave

Weaving is an ancient art technique for creating tapestry designs. Today, there are different versions and sizes of tools available for weaving. Before you embark on your creative project, you will need a number of basic materials.

Tools and accessories you will need for weaving

The great benefit of weaving is that there are various versions available of all the accessories used for the creative hobby. You will need the following before you start weaving:

  • A loom (available in various sizes, qualities, and designs)
  • Yarn (to be used for weaving)
  • Cotton yarn (to be used for 'threading' your loom)
  • A tapestry needle (feel free to choose one with a large eye)
  • A comb (to be used to gather and stack your yarn rows).

Use strong cotton yarn for treading your loom. You can choose whichever colour of yarn you like. White yarn is a popular choice, as it is a neutral colour that will not clash with your final design.

How to get started

You need to start by threading your loom with the cotton yarn. This can be done in different ways. Follow the instructions included for your specific loom, so you make sure to do it in the correct way. Often a technique called "Hitch Knot" is used, which locks the threads so that they do not unravel when you start weaving.

Start with the basic technique

The very simple and basic weaving technique is the one where you lead your string over and under each line on your loom. Be sure to tie your string tightly when you start on a new one. This can be done by poking your tapestry needle up from the backside of the loom and twisting it twice around a cotton thread.

You can, in principle, work with whichever technique you want for your design. You can lead your string around every other thread or mix different twisting techniques.

Remember to leave 5-7cm of the unwoven frame both at the top and the bottom.
