Gauge:

12.5 s x 40 rw (20 k s) in brioche s on needle size 5 mm = 10 x 10 cm. The swatch should be measured after washing since brioche s tends to stretch when washed.

Needles:

Circular needle 5 mm (40, 80 or 100 cm), circular needle 4 mm (120 cm or 2 x 80 cm)

Double pointed needles 4 and 5 mm.

Or the size you need to get gauge.

Pattern: Brioche stitch (brioche s)

Rw 1 (rs): K1 (selvedge (se)), “k1, sl1p with yo” repeat from “ to “ until 2 s remain on the rw. K2.

Rw 2 (ws): K1, “sl1p with yo, k tog the next s and the yo” repeat from “ to “ until 2 s remain on the rw. Sl1p with yo, k1.

Repeat rw 1 and 2.

Increases (inc):

M1L and M1R are worked idenitcally in brioche st. Inc by 2 sts at a time to follow the pattern.

Rw 1 (rs): K1 and let the s stay on the left needle. Yo and k the s again.

Rw 2 (ws): P1, sl1k with yo, k1 (without yo), sl1p with yo.

Decreases (dec):

Dec right:

K2tog and move the s back on the left needle. Drop the second s (k s with yo) off the needle so that it is now bo. Sl1p.

Dec left:

Sl1k (k s with yo), k2tog, loosely bo 1 s.

Back piece:

Co 19 (23) 23 (25) s on circular needle 5 mm

Rw 1 (ws): Se (k), brioche s until 1 st remains, se (k)

Rw 2 (rs): Se (k), 4 s brioche s, inc, brioche s until 6 s remain on row, inc, brioche s until 1 s remains, se (k)

Rw 3 -5: Se (k), brioche s until 1 s remains, se (k)

Repeat rw 2-5 a total of 8 (8) 9 (9) times. (= 51 (55) 59 (61) s). Next rw is a rs rw.

Work brioche s in the flat, until the work measures approx 23 (24) 25 (26) cm measured from the cast on edge. End with a ws rw. The se are k on both rs and ws.

Now, inc are worked to shape the armhole.

Rw 6 (rs): Se (k), 4 sts brioche st, inc, brioche st until 6 sts remain on row, inc, brioche st until 1 st remains, se (k)

Rw 7 -9: Se (k), brioche s until 1 st remains, se (k)

Repeat rw 6-9 a total of 1 (1) 1 (1) time. Now, work rw 6-7 once.

The work now measures approx 25 (26) 27 (28) cm measured from the cast on edge. (= 59 (63) 67 (69) s). Next rw is a rs row. Put the s on hold.

Right front piece

Pick up 13 (13) 15 (15) s from the se. Count 15 (15) 17 (17) down from the cast on edge - begin there and end with the first s at the cast on edge. This corresponds to picking up approx 1 s from every other rw. Next rw is a ws row.

Rw 1 (ws): Se (k), “sl1p with yo, k1” repeat from “ to “ until 2 s remain, sl1p with yo, se (k).

Rw 2 (rs): Se (k), “k1, sl1p” repeat from “ to “ until 1 st remains, se (k)

Repeat rw 1-2, until the work measures approx 9 (7) 10 (10) cm measured from the cast on edge. End with a ws rw.

Now, inc are worked to shape a front slope.

Rw 3 (rs): Se (k) and continue in brioche s until 6 s remain on the rw, inc, brioche s until 1 s remains, se (k).

Rw 4 -6: Se (k), brioche s until 1 s remains, se (k)

Repeat rw 3-6 a total of 7 (8) 8 (9) times. (= 27 (29) 31 (33) s)

No more inc are made for now. Work brioche s, until the work measures approx 23 (24) 25 (26) cm measured from the edge where s were picked up.

Now, inc are worked to shape the armhole.

Rw 7 (rs): Se (k), 4 s brioche s, inc, brioche s until 1 s remains, se (k)

Rw 8 -10: Se (k), brioche s until 1 s remains, se (k)

Repeat rw 7-10 a total of 1 (1) 1 (1) time.

Now, work rw 7-8 once. (= 31 (33) 35 (37) s). The next rw is a rs rw. Put the s on hold.

Left front piece

Pick up 13 (13) 15 (15) s from the se at the left shoulder. Begin at the cast on edge and end 15 (15) 17 (17) k s further down. This corresponds to picking up 1 s from every other row. Next rw is a ws row.

Rw 1 (ws): Se (k), “sl1p with yo, k1” repeat from “ to “ until 2 s remain, sl1p with yo, se (k)

Rw 2 (rs): Se (k), “k1, sl1p” repeat from “ to “ until 1 s remains, se (k)

Body

You are now ready to join the pieces of the body. Begin on the rs of the left front piece.

K the se and work the s of the front piece in brioche s. P together the right se of the left front piece with the left se of the back piece. Work all back s in brioche s according to the s, until 1 s remains on the rw. P together the right se of the back piece with the left se of the right front piece. Work all front piece s in brioche s according to the s, k the se. (= 119 (127) 135 (141) s)

Work all body s in brioche s in the flat, until the work measures approx 43 (45) 47 (49) cm measured from the cast on edge. The se are k on both rs and ws. Next rw is a rs row.

Change to needle size 4 mm, work 6 cm in rib, end with a rs rw and bo with tubular bind off.

Sleeves:

Pick up 44 (50) 54 (58) s from the armhole with circular needle 5 mm (40 cm). This corresponds to picking up approx 1 s per every other k s. Now, work brioche s in the round. Be aware that on every other rd, the p s are worked.

Work brioche s in the round, until the work measures approx 24.5 (25) 25.5 (30) cm measured from the edge where s were picked up. On the next rd, work the k s.

Now, dec at the beginning and end of the rd like this:

Rd 1 (rs): Dec right, brioche s until 4 s remain, dec left, 1 s brioche s.

Rd 2 (ws): Work brioche s according to the s

Work rw 1-2 another 1 (1) 0 (0) time(s).

Forearm:

Work 22 (22) 20 (24) rd (= 11 (11) 10 (12) k s) in brioche s.

The next rw is a rs rw. Work 1 rd with dec like this:

Rd 1 (rs): Dec right, brioche s until 4 s remain, dec left, 1 s brioche s.

Rd 2 (ws): Brioche s throughout rd.

Repeat rd 1-2 total of 3 (4) 5 (4) times and change to double pointed needles if you do not wish to use the magic loop method. (= 28 (30) 34 (38) s). The work now measures approx 45 (49) 53 (56) cm measured from the edge where s were picked up.

Change to needle size 4 mm and work 10 rd in rib. Bo with tubular bind off.

Rib edge along the chest and neck:

Pick up 310 (314) 322 (330) s with a long circular needle size 4 mm like this:

Begin on the front of the right front piece. Pick up 15 s from the rib, pick up 1 s from the next 2 s respectively, m1a. You now have 18 s on the needle.

Continue like this: M1a after every other picked up s, until you reach the rib edge. When you reach the rib edge at the bottom of the left front piece, pick up 15 s (approx 1 s per rw).

Rw 1 (ws): Sl1k, “p1, k1” repeat from “ to “ until 2 s remain, k2

Rw 2 (rs): Sl1k, “k1, p1” repeat from “ to “ until 1 s remains, k1

Rw 3 (ws): Sl1k, “p1, k1” repeat from “ to “ until 2 s remain, k2

Rw 4 (rs): Sl1k, work 5 s in rib according to the s, bo 3 s for a buttonhole, “work 25 (25) 26 (26) s in rib, bo 3 s” repeat from “ to “ a total of 3 times. Work in rib according to the s throughout the rw.

Rw 5 (ws): Sl1k, “work in rib according to the s until the bo s, pick up 3 s” repeat from “ to “ a total of 4 times. Work in rib according to the s, until 1 s remains. K1.

Work 3 rw in rib according to the s. The first s on each rw is still slipped purlwise with yarn in front, and the last s is k. Bo tightly with tubular bind off from the ws.

Seaming:

Weave in all ends with a tapestry needle and sew on buttons along the left front piece opposite the buttonholes.

The cardigan should be washed in order to level the stitches and get gauge. Wash it by hand at approx 30°C and let it dry while lying flat. If you wish to shorten the drying time, the cardigan can be spinned in a washing machine at approx 900 rpm. You may use a washing bag.
