Technique tutorial: Increasing and decreasing in brioche stitch

Increasing in brioche stitch

Increases in brioche stitch are made by working the same knit stitch multiple times like this: knit, yarn over, knit.

Insert the right needle into the stitch, as if you were to knit it, make a yarn over and pull it back (like a normal stitch), leave the stitch on the left needle, but make another yarn over on the right needle (you now have 2 stitches on the right needle), insert the right needle into the stitch again (the same as before), make a yarn over and pull it back (like a normal stitch). You now have 3 stitches on the right needle (1 knit stitch, 1 purl stitch, 1 knit stitch) and you can drop the stitch from the left needle and continue.

Consequently, 1 increase equals 2 new stitches and 3 in total.

Decreasing in brioche stitch

Decreases in brioche stitch are worked like this: Slip the first knit stitch, knit the next 2 stitches together, pass the first knit stitch over the 2 stitches that were knitted together.
