Beginner’s guide to crochet

Have you often thought about wanting to learn how to crochet, but you don’t really know where to start? Then this guide is perfect for you. Here, you will learn the basics about crochet and reading patterns, and from then on it's all about practice.

Stitches

When you crochet, you can work with different types of stitches, and as a beginner, it can be a little confusing. There are 5 basic crochet stitches that are worth knowing as a beginner. We have a guide on the abbreviations of the different stitches here that are often used in crochet patterns.

Chain Stitch

Chain stitches are used when starting a project and for turning your work to crochet in the other direction. They can also be used in a crochet pattern to create a special pattern design. You can also start your work with a magic ring, which we also have a tutorial for.

Slip Stitch

Slip stitches are often used when finishing a project, but they are also used for pattern designs along with other stitches.

Double Crochet

A double crochet stitch is often used when crocheting soft toys and amigurumi. It can also be used with other stitches to create a pattern design.

Half Treble

Half treble stitches take up more space in height than double crochet stitches and are often used to create a pattern design.

Treble

A treble stitch takes up even more space than a half-treble stitch and is also used to create a pattern design.

Crochet Patterns

Crochet patterns have a list in the beginning of the tools and materials that you will need, as well as an overview of the specific stitches you will have to crochet and how these are abbreviated. If any special techniques are used, they will also be explained in the crochet pattern. Depending on whether you work in the round or crochet back and forth in rows, the pattern will be divided up according to which row or round you have reached. Just start at the top and follow the pattern down chronologically.

After each row or round, it will frequently state in parentheses how many stitches you should have in total, so feel free to count to make sure that you have the right number of stitches.

With our crochet patterns, you can easily buy the materials you need for the pattern. But sometimes it's also nice to use something you already have lying around, or if you have a special colour that you love. Here are some materials that are good to have that can be used for different patterns.

Various tools that can be useful to have at your fingertips

Now that you've mastered the techniques and found the pattern you want to make first, it's time to get your first tools. Crochet is not the most economical heavy stone to turn over in the yarn universe, and the same goes for your first crochet equipment. That's why we recommend starting with some inexpensive equipment that you can use for patterns with lower levels of difficulty. Our crochet starter kit is a perfect place to start. You get an entire crochet hook set that can tackle all patterns and equipment such as a tape measure, round counter and stitch markers. However, you can also make do with a cheap crochet hook set and some cheap yarn to start out with. The choice is entirely up to you, and with that said, let's move on to which yarn you can choose from.

To crochet rags, towels and figures, which are great beginner patterns, cotton yarn is often needed:

Cotton yarn is the most popular yarn for crochet, and also the yarn you'll come across in all beginner-level patterns. That's why we've gathered all the cotton yarns we recommend you try first. Although you can find a lot of different types of cotton yarns on the webshop, these qualities have been selected specifically for beginners. They're all 100% cotton, so you avoid blended yarns that are often used for more complicated patterns, such as clothing.
