  • Petrichor (n.)
  • The pleasant, earthy smell after rain

The smell of rain, a nice word for which we have a often forgotten word for in English. The top is made in Shamrock Yarns 100% Mercerised Cotton

Size

This pattern comes in 9 different sizes: XS, S, M, (L, XL, 2XL), (3XL, 4XL and 5XL).

If your chest measures 72.5 cm go for size XS (80 cm)

If it measures 82.5 cm go for size S (90 cm)

92.5 = size M (100 cm)

102.5 = L (110 cm)

112.5 = XL (120 cm)

122.5 = 2XL (130 cm)

132.5 = 3XL (140 cm)

142.5 = 4XL (150 cm)

152.5 = 5XL (160 cm)

Crochet tension

  • 13 edc = 10 cm
  • 12.5 rows of edc = 10 cm

Petrichor is made approx. 7.5 cm larger than body measurements, to get plenty of room to move around and feel comfortable.

The top is made flat, in one piece. The buttonholes are made after the top has been crocheted, and serve as closure.

The pattern is for the short model. If you want a longer top, you can measure the desired length from about your armpits. This is where the cups begin.

1. Make 106, 120, 134, (146, 160, 172), (186, 200, 212) ch, edc in other ch from hook and over. (105, 119, 133, (145, 159, 171), (185, 199, 211) edc) Turn.

2. Make 1 ch (does not count as a stitch), dc in each stitch above. (105, 119, 133, (145, 159, 171), (185, 199, 211) dc) Turn.

3. Repeat row 2 until you have a total of 26 rows, or to desired length. Finish with a even numbered row. Do not cut the thread.

Right cup

1. Make 1 ch and 1 edc in the next 25, 30, 32, (34, 36, 38), (41, 46, 49) edc. Turn.

2. Make 1 ch, skip first stitch, edc until you have 2 stitches left. 2edctog. Turn. (2 sts less)

* For sizes beginning with an odd number of stitches: Repeat row 2 until you have 3 stitches left. Then make 2 ch, skip first st, 2edctog. Cut the thread.

* For sizes starting with an even number of stitches: Repeat row 2 until you have 4 stitches left. Then work 2 ch, skip first st, 2edctog. Turn. 1 ch, 2 edctog. Cut the thread.

Back section

The back section is optional and the top works equally well with or without. It is recommended to try the top on to see if you want a little extra height. You can also repeat the rows as many times as you want for even more height.

1. With the right side facing you, fasten the thread on stitch No 26, 31, 33, (35, 37, 39), (42, 47, 50) counting from the top right corner. 1 ch, skip first stitch, 2 edctog, edc until you have 4 stitches left before left cup begins. 3 edctog (51, 55, 65, (73, 83, 91), (99, 103, 109)

2. Repeat row 1 (decreasing 4 stitches for each row) until you have a total of 3, 4, 4, (5, 5, 5), (6, 6, 6) rows, or to the desired length. Cut the thread.

Button band

1. With the right side facing you, fasten the thread in the top of the opening (left side as if you have the top on). Make dc evenly spaced out until you can reach the bottom of the opening (I had 3 dc per 2 rows). The number of stitches is not important, but make sure it doesn't curl (too many dc per row) or get too tight (too few dc per row).

2. Make 1 ch, dc in every stitch over. Cut the thread.

Button band with buttonholes

1. With the right side facing you, fasten the thread to the bottom of the opening (right side as if you have top on). Make dc evenly spaced out until you reach the top of the opening (I had 3 dc per 2 rows). Insert 9 stitch markers evenly spaced where you want the buttonhole.

2. 1 ch, dc to first sm, 1 ch, skip marked stitch*[dc to next sm, 1 ch, skip marked stitch]. Repeat from * and over. Note: some of the test crocheters needed to do 2 ch to get the button to fit, so try the button in the first hole before continuing.

3. 1 ch, dc in all stitches and ch across. Do not cut the thread, but continue to make dc around the edge of the top, with 2 dc in each corner and on top of the cups. Finish with a sl at the bottom of the right front opening. Cut the thread.

The icing on the cake

1. Fasten all loose threads and sew on buttons.

2. If you want a thread around the waist, layer desired number of ch and pull the thread through the bottom of the top.
