Here is a comprehensive picture guide that will show you how to crochet a magnetic fishing rod as well as magnetic fish to go along. Both the fishing rod and the fish are crocheted with Shamrock yarns 100% Cotton 8/4.

• Darning needle for finishing

Other Materials

• 2 Floral Stem Wires
• 10 Magnets

Abbreviations

dc - double crochet stitch

ch - chain stitch

inc - increase (2 stitches in the same stitch)

dec – decrease (2 stitches crocheted together)

sl st – slip stitch

htr – half treble

tr - treble

Instructions

Fish

We begin by making the five magnetic fish.

Start by making 3 double crochet stitches in a magic ring, - make sure to leave yarn tail of approx. 20cm.

- Inc x 3 (6)

- 1 dc, inc x 3 (9)

- 9 dc (9)

- 2, inc x 3 (12)

- 12 dc (12)

- 3 dc, inc x 3 (15)

Pull out the end from the magic ring and use it as a marker. You will use this end later.

- You now make 8 rounds of 15 dc.

Once you have crocheted the 8 rounds, you place the magnet in the head and sew the head together using the end from the magic ring. You sew through the head of the fish in the round where the end is.

I bring the needle back and forth twice to make the head a little more prominent. Once you have sewn the head together, you cut the yarn and weave in the end.

You can possibly use the other magnets to test and make sure that it hasn’t fallen out.

You now make the rest of the fish’s body.

Bring your crochet hook into the middle of the end of the fish, stitch no 1 and 4 where you have reached - then it goes straight through. Pull out the end and make a slip stitch.

- Make 8 ch

Start in the second stitch from the crochet hook and make:

- 1 half treble

- 3 treble stitches

- 2 half treble stitches

- 1 double crochet stitch

Make a slip stitch where the chain row starts, and turn the fish one round (picture 3).

Make 8 ch and make the other tail fin, start in the second stitch from the crochet hook and make:

- 1 half treble

- 3 treble stitches

- 2 half treble stitches

- 1 double crochet stitch

Finish with a sl st where you started making the tail fins. Cut the yarn and weave in the end.

Make the last 4 fish, so you have a total of 5 fish.

Fishing rod

Now you make the inner part of the fishing rod. For this part, you will need the floral stem wire and the pliers.

You use two pieces of floral stem wire. You put the two sticks together and bend the ends inwards so the 'pointed' end doesn't stick out of the fishing rod.

Use the pliers to bend the wire to form a small eye - and put it together with the other piece of wire.

   

Now we have to get the yarn and crochet hook again, we will be using the sand coloured yarn now.

Start by making 6 dc in a magic ring.

- Crochet rounds of 6 dc until the length fits with the rod - finish with a slip stitch and cut the yarn.

   

Put the two floral stem wires into the rod, and weave the last 6 stitches together. You can bring the needle through the 'eyes' we made on the floral stem wire so it doesn't slip.

Also weave in the end of the magic ring and cut the yarn.

   

For the magnetic hook, you also use the sand coloured yarn.

Start by making 4 dc in a magic ring.

- Inc x 4 (8)

- 8 dc in the back loop (picture 3).

   

Once you have made 8 dc in the back loop, you crochet the rest in both stitch loops as normal.

- Make a round of 8 dc

 

Take 5 magnets and place them down into the 'hook'.

- Dec x 4 (4)

Cut the yarn, but leave a long tail of yarn.

   

Weave the last 4 dc together, bring your crochet hook in through the top and pull a loop.

   

Make 40 ch and fasten it on the end of the fishing rod.

   

Now you make the fishing rod handle/grip. Here you need to use the brown colour.

Start making 5 dc in a magic ring

(weave in the end as soon as you feel you have enough stitches for it)

- Inc x 5 (10)

- make 22 rounds of 10 dc

Finish with a slip stitch cut the yarn.

   

Pull the grip onto the bottom of the fishing rod and sew it on with the yarn end. Fasten off and cut.

  

You can now try to catch your 5 fish with your magnetic fishing rod.
