Technical explanation
The twist stitch
The twist stitch is composed of several different stitches, and you crochet in both the previous and current round.
After the round of dc stitches, start in the second stitch from the hook, and then crochet back into the stitch of the previous round - just like a cross stitch, you just have to work into the previous round.
You start by making a dc in the second stitch from the crochet hook - you don't finish it, but just pull it through.
Yarn around the crochet hook (treble stitch) before bringing the crochet hook through the first stitch from the previous round. Pull the yarn back with you, there should now be 4 strands on the crochet hook.
Yarn over and bring it through all 4 at once.
Now you have made a twist stitch, continue all the way around.
Continue in the same way as the previous round, making sure to get the second stitch from the crochet hook - the first stitch may be slightly hidden from the previous twist stitch. Make sure the crochet hook comes straight through the stitch, it can be a little tight as there are several threads in the stitch.
It is important that you get into the stitch of the previous round - so that the twists will be in line with each other. If you don't, they will lie on top of each other as shown in the middle picture - in the last picture, you can see how deep you have to go down.
Colour change
If you want to make the edge of the bread basket a different colour, you make a colour change in the last stitch of the round. The stitch is made normally, but when you have the 4 strands on the crochet hook, you have to get the new colour around the crochet hook and bring it through.
In the next round you will get the new colour.
Instructions
Start by working 6 fm in a magic ring (6).
From here on you work dc stitches, until otherwise mentioned.
• inc x 6 (12)
• 1, inc x 6 (18)
• 2, inc x 6 (24)
• 3, inc x 6 (30)
• 4, inc x 6 (36)
• 5, inc x 6 (42)
• 6, inc x 6 (48)
• 7, inc x 6 (54)
• 8, inc x 6 (60)
• 9, inc x 6 (66)
If you want to make the large version of the basket continue with a few more rounds.
• 10, inc x 6 (72)
• 11, inc x 6 (78)
Now the bottom of the basket is made and we need to get started on the edge. Continue by making a round of dc in the back loop.
Now we are going to start making the twist stitches - find the detailed picture guide above.
You start by making a double crochet in the second stitch from the hook - it does not have to be completed, but just pulled through.
Yarn around the crochet hook (treble stitch) before bringing the hook through the first stitch from the previous round. Pull the yarn back, you should now have 4 strands on the crochet hook.
Yarn over and pull through all 4 strands at once.
• If you are making the small basket, crochet 4 rounds - and 1 round of the other colour
• If you making the large basket, crochet 6 rounds - and 2 rounds of the other colour
Once you have crocheted all the rounds, you make a round of slip stitches.
Cut the yarn and weave in the end.
