A perfect summer top for both sunny and cloudy days. In other words, a summer top designed for the ever changing Nordic summer weather. The top is worked in a thick yarn and grows quickly on needles 4,5 mm. The top has a loose, breathable fit. The design is simple, but with details which provide character. The top is worked bottom up on circular needles. Eventually, the work is divided into front piece and back piece which are worked separately in the flat. In the end, stitches are picked up for the ruffle edge which is worked in the round.

Pattern

Co 165 (175) 185 (197) s on circular needle 4,5 mm.

Work stockinette stitch in the round until the work measures 22 (24) 25 (26) cm measured from the cast on edge.

The work is now divided into front piece and back piece. Bo the first 26 (28) 30 (32) s (below the right sleeve), work 36 (38) 40 (42) s and place them on a stitch holder, bo 26 (28) 30 (32) s (below the left sleeve). The remaining 77 (81) 85 (91) s are for the front piece which is worked as described below.

Now work the front piece in the flat while decreasing on every 3rd r on both sides like this:

*K 1 r, p 1 r. On the next r (RS): ssk, k until 2 s remain, k2tog.

P 1 r, k 1 r. On the next r (WS): p2tog tbl, p until 2 s remain, p2tog.*

Repeat from * to * a total of 5 (5) 5 (6) times until 57 (61) 65 (67) s remain.

Now the front piece is divided into the two chest pieces which are worked separately.

On the RS, k 22 (23) 25 (27) s, bo 13 (15) 15 (13) s, k 22 (23) 25 (27) s.

Chest pieces:

The chest piece now has 22 (23) 25 (27) s.

*P 1 r.

On the next r (RS): ssk in the first 2 s and k2tog in the last 2 s*. Repeat from * to * a total of 9 (9) 9 (10) times.

The chest piece now has 4 (5) 7 (7) s.

Work stockinette stitch in the flat until the “strap” measures approx 23 (25) 25 (27) cm measured from the last decrease. Adjust the length according to your body and depending on how deep you want the neckline to be. Try the top on during the process. End with a RS r.

Place the 4 (5) 7 (7) s on a stitch holder.

Same procedure for the other chest piece (begin with a WS row).

Back piece:

Put the 36 (38) 40 (42) s on the stitch holder back on the needle. Begin with a WS row. Ssk in the first 2 s and k2tog in the last 2 s.

Work stockinette stitch in the flat and work decreases on all RS r until 8 (10) 14 (14) s remain (also on the first RS r despite the decrease on the WS r).

Work stockinette stitch in the flat for another approx 10 cm.

Now the back piece and the two straps are stitched together with Kitchener stitch (see technique elaboration above).

icord edges:

icord edges are worked in the armholes as well as the neckline. See technique elaboration above.

Pick up 124 (140) 166 (178) s along the neckline with the RS facing you. If you want the opening to be slightly tighter/smaller, pick up fewer s). Begin at the seam on the back. Co 4 new s, *k3, ssk*, move 4 s back on the right needle and repeat from * to * until all s are bound off except the 3 s you “cast on”. Now stitch together the 3 open s with the 3 s of the cast on edge, see technique elaboration above.

Pick up 140 (160) 185 (200) s along the armhole. If you want the opening to be slightly tighter/smaller, pick up fewer s). Begin at the bottom of the armhole. The icord edge is worked as described above.

Ruffle edge:

Now pick up s and work the ruffle edge.

Pick up s along the cast on edge from the RS like this: *Pick up 1 s, yo*, repeat for every cast on s all way round.

You now have 330 (350) 370 (394) s.

On the next rnd, k the picked up s and k the yo tbl.

Work stockinette stitch in the round until the ruffle measures approx 5 (6) 7 (8) cm or your desired length.

Bo with the picot bind off method where you bo 2 s and pick up 3 s, see technique elaboration above.

Seaming/Finishing:

Weave in all ends and wash the top. We would love for you to share pictures of your work with #ritokrea #lilysommertop @krea_lea @ritodk
