Free beginner-friendly knitting pattern for Pull-Over Vest

Smart and simple cropped vest, knitted in one piece with high slits in the sides and unique detail in the armholes. It is a beginner-friendly knitting project, knitted on needle size 7 mm in either 2 strands of Infinity Hearts Daisy or 1 strand of Infinity Hearts Snowdrop. Size:

The vest can be knitted in sizes Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large:

  • Size S measures 40 cm in chest width and 42 cm from mid neck to bottom
  • Size M measures 42 cm in chest width and 42 cm from mid neck to bottom
  • Size L measures 45 cm in chest width and 45 cm from mid neck to bottom
  • Size XL measures 47 cm in chest width and 45 cm from mid neck to bottom

Yarn consumption:

Knitting tension 12 stitches x 18 rows = 10 x 10 cm.

  • Size S: 6 skeins of Daisy or 4 skeins Snowdrop from Infinity Hearts
  • Size M: 8 skeins Daisy or 5 skeins Snowdrop from Infinity Hearts
  • Size L: 8 skeins Daisy or 5 skeins Snowdrop from Infinity Hearts
  • Size XL: 8 skeins Daisy or 6 skeins Snowdrop from Infinity Hearts

NOTE: If you choose Daisy, work with 2 strands, if you choose Snowdrop, work with 1 strand.

Techniques

  • Casting on
  • Knit and purl
  • To cast off
  • Increasing by lifting the loop between stitches
  • Knitting into back into stitch
  • Picking up stitches along an edge
  • Joining stitches over other stitches in the piece
  • Finishing with mattress stitches

Abbreviations

st(s) = stitch(es)

k = knit

p = purl

es = edge stitch

Instructions

NOTE: All es on both the right and the wrong side are knitted k.

Cast on 50 (54) 58 (62) stitches with needle size 7 mm.

Row 1, wrong side: 1 k (es), 1 p, 2 k and 2 p to last 2 stitches, 1 p and 1 es

Row 2, right side: 2 k, 2 p, remember last stitch, es knitted k

Repeat these 2 rows until piece measures 10 cm.

Continue in stocking stitch from the right side.

On the first k row increase 2 stitches in the middle of the piece as follows: pick up the thread between the stitches with the tip of the right needle in front of the piece, place it on the left needle and knit it into back iof stitch = 52 (56) 60 (64) stitches.

Continue working until the piece measures 21 (22) 23 (24) cm.

Cast off 8 (8) 10 (10) stitches in each side, remaining stitches = 36 (40) 40 (44)

Continue working until piece measures 40 (42) 44 (46) cm, finish with a purl stitch

Next row, right side: Knit 4 (5) 5 (6) stitches in stocking stitch.

Over the next 28 (30) 30 (32) stitches work rib 2 k 2 p

Finish with 4 (5) 5 (6) k

Next row, wrong side: 1 es k, 3 (4) 4 (5) stitches p, then k over k and purl over purl the next 28 (30) 30 (32) stitches.

Finish with 3 (4) 4 (5) purl stitches and 1 es k.

Next row, right side: Knit 4 (5) 5 (6) stitches k.

Then finish rib edge in k 28 (30) 30 (32) stitches.

Next row, wrong side: 1 es k, 3 (4) 4 (5) p, cast on 28 (30) 30 (32) stitches, 3 p, 1 es k

Next row, right side: Knit all stitches k

Next row, wrong side: 1 es k, 3 (4) 4 (5) p, 28 (30) 30 (32) stitches rib 2 k 2 p, 3 (4) 4 (5) p, 1 es k

Next row, right side: Knit 4 (5) 5 (6) stitches in stocking stitch.

Over the next 28 (30) 30 (32) stitches knit rib k over k and p over p

Finish with 4 (5) 5 (6) k

Next row, wrong side: 1 es k, 3 (4) 4 (5) p, 28 (30) 30 (32) stitches rib 2 k 2 p, 3 (4) 4 (5) p, 1 es k

Work stocking stitch until the upper part of the back is the same length as the upper part of the front

Next row: cast on 8 (8) 10 (10) stitches in each side of piece 52 (56) 60 (64) stitches

Knit stocking stitch 11 cm - remember all es k

Next row, right side: work to the middle of the piece, knit 2 stitches together 2 times, knit row out.

Then work 11 cm rib and cast off.

Now work the sleeve edges:

Pick up 38 (40) 42 (44) along armholes.

Work 8 (8) 10 (10) rows

Work three rows rib 2 k 2 p, cast off and repeat process in the other armhole.

Now we need to fix the neckline, because when you cast on stitches inside the piece, there may be "holes":

Pick up 60 (62) 62 (64) stitches around neckline to match stitch pattern from cast off

Cast off in k on next round.

Tip: If you still have a small "hole", you can carefully close it with a mattress stitch

Finishing:

Sew the sleeve edge to the body with mattress stitches.

With mattress stitches sew the body together - if you don't want a slit, sew all the way down.
