Free crochet pattern for the Bricon potholders

Download PDF here

The Bricon potholders stand out from the classic flat potholders with its 3D structure. The principle of the potholder is fairly easy to understand. First a net is crocheted, then flounces are crocheted on, which gives it the charachertistic curly pattern.

Materials:

Yarn consumption:

For the two potholders you need:

  • Infinity Hearts Rose Big yarn 114 navy blue - 90 g, equivalent to 2 balls
  • Infinity Hearts Rose Big yarn 190 Mustard - 180 g, equivalent to 4 balls

Size:

The pot holders measure 25 x 25 cm, 33 x 33 cm including the handle in the corners.

Abbreviations:

dc - double crochet
ch - chain stitch
sl - slip stich
tr - treble crochet

Instructions:

Start by making 46 chain stitches, make a treble crochet in the 8th chain stitch.

Make 2 chain stitches.
- Skip 2 stitches and make a treble crochet in the 3rd stitch.
- Continue the row out

Make 5 chain stitches and turn the work
- Make a treble crochet in the 3rd stitch

Now repeat:

*make 2 chain stitches

 - Skip 2 stitches and make a treble crochet ind the 3rd stitch

 - Continue for the entire row

Make 5 chain stitches and turn the work

 - Make a treble crochet in the 3rd stitch*

Continue making rows until 18 rows have been made - corresponding to 17 "holes" both horizontally and vertically.

Make a border all the way around the pot holder, make it in two rounds.

- In the first round, make 3 double crochets in each "hole".

When you get to the corners, make 3 double crochets, 17 chain stitches, 3 double crochets
- Continue all the way around the piece

Finish the first round with a double crochet around the whole row.

In the second round make small "tips" all around, this is done at each "hole" along all sides.

Make 3 chain stitches, skip the first two stitches - and make a slip stitch in the 3rd stitch.

Then make another slip stitch, 3 chain stitches - skip 1 stitch, 1 slip stitch.
- continue along the entire side

When you get to the corner, make 25 double crochets around the row of chain stitches - finish by making a double crochet under the double crochet of the previous round (see picture 5).

Then continue in the same way until you are all the way around.

Finish with a slip stitch, cut the yarn and fasten the end.

Now the first part of the potholders is finished, you just need to make another one so you have two.

Now make the flounces, work them around the chain stitch rows. Start in the corner, you can see the pattern in the first picture, continue all the way around.

Make a double crochet around the row of chain stitches, make 2 chain stitches - this counts as 1 treble crochet. Make 4 treble crochets around the row of chain stitches, so that there are 5 stitches in total on one side.

Now turn the piece slightly and make 5 treble crochets around the next chain stitch row of the pattern.

Continue until you are all the way around, cut the yarn.

The back of the potholders should look like this.

It is the same procedure for the next round of flounces, start again in the corner and work all the way around. Make a total of 4 rounds of flounces on the potholders, each round getting smaller and smaller.

Finally fasten all ends.

You are welcome to use #ritokrea when you share the pictures of the finished project on social media, as we would love to see the final result :-)
