Silk has many good properties.

Silk fabric is a living fabric that can be a little difficult to handle for a beginner. Especially if you want to use silk to sew clothes. However, silk has many advantages that make it an obvious choice for pillowcases and other types of items made from fabric that is close to the skin.

If you want to protect your hair and skin, the natural silk fabric is good because silk is smooth compared to other natural fibres such as wool. On top of that, silk can absorb as much as 30% extra water compared to the weight of the fabric, without the fabric feeling damp.

Dye your silk fabric in your favourite colour

With us, you can get silk fabrics in different textures, all of which can take dyeing. If you want to dye your silk, make sure you use the right fabric dye. This is because silk is a natural product that can be dissolved by certain chemicals. Silk dyes have been developed specifically for the fine texture of silk.

How to dye your silk:

1. Wash the silk fabric so that it is completely clean
2. Wet the fabric without dripping and put it in some kind of container or bowl
3. Apply silk paint to the fabric, using your hands (remember gloves!) to spread the paint if necessary
4. You can dry the dye by letting it air dry for a while and then using a dryer or blow dryer to dry the fabric evenly.

Should you have missed a spot, you can always go in with a little water and dye if you need to fix stains.

Make beautiful nonufelting with silk chiffon

In addition to silk, we also sell silk chiffon that can be dyed and used for nunofelting. Nunofelting is a special technique where you filter wet silk and wool together. The wool fibres will work their way into the fabric, which can give a nice texture but retains the lightness of the silk fabric. It's a great technique that can be used to make light, stylish scarves or whole pieces of fabric to sew blouses from, for example.

Maintain your silk properly

Silk is spun from the cocoons of silkworms, which contain one long thread that can grow up to 1600 metres long. Because it is a natural product, you should also wash and care for your silk properly.

When the fabric gets wet, it is more delicate and sensitive to wear and tear. Washing machines often have a programme specifically for silk and delicate fabrics, but you can always wash your silk by hand.

You can iron your creations with a cold iron while the silk is still damp. Try to avoid direct sunlight on the silk, as the fibres do not benefit from UV light.
