Tunisian crochet how-to
Start with a ch row. Start the first round by inserting the needle through the 2nd ch from the crochet hook, yo hook and pull it through the stitch. Insert the hook through the ch and continue this for the rest of the round. All new stitches are now on the needle and you have the number of stitches that the pattern should have.
Do not turn the work, but start like this: Yo, pull the thread through the first stitch. * yo, pull the thread through 2 stitches * repeat from * - * for the rest of the round. Note that the number of stitches is kept constant each time you pick up stitches. This technique provides a dense material of squares as well as a clear front and back.
On the next row, pick up the strand through the vertical strand from the previous row (see the ring in the picture).
In this pattern, two different colours have been used. The last stitch in a row must be picked up through two strands of different yarn as shown in the picture.
Instructions
- Make 11 sl sts (14 if you make a size large) with C1.
- Pick up a thread in each sl st. Switch to C2 and make a closing row. (11 for size small, 14 for size large)
- tss in each stitch, change to C1 and cl.
- tss in each stitch, change to C2 and cl.
Repeat steps 3 and 4 until the work measures respectively 37cm (42cm) 47cm (52cm) 54cm or (57cm) when stretched.
Cast off and leave a long strand for sewing later.
The linen headband is made from a flat piece and sewn together to make the twisted knot detail.
Assembly
- Lay the piece flat, and with the right side (the side with the TSS stitches) facing up, pinch the two ends of the piece together into two V’s. Place them as shown in the picture above.
- Sew the ends together as shown with the red dotted line. Make sure you get all 4 ends.
- Weave in all loose threads, turn the work right side out and voila, then you have a warm and cosy headband with a twist.
