instructions

Before you start, turn on the oven at 130°C.

Start by taking the selected colours of modelling clay you want to use and cut off a suitable piece:

The modelling clay needs to be softened up, which is done by heating it up and kneading it. The more you work with it, the easier it will be to shape:

Once your modelling clay is soft enough, you're going to start moulding it. To make bowls, it needs to be made flat as a start. This is most easily done with a rolling pin, but it can also be pressed down by hand:

Then you can shape your bowl into just the shape you want it. This can be done freehand or you can use an ovenproof bowl. It can either be placed on the bottom of the bowl, as in the picture below, or inside the bowl. Once you have the right shape, you can put the cernit bowl briefly in the fridge so that it hardens a little and does not collapse:

Then put it in the oven, where the project should take between 10 and 30 minutes to harden. Feel the material as you go - it should be stiff and no longer soft. Afterwards let your bowl cool off.

Once the bowl has cooled down enough, apply the varnish. The varnish is available in both gloss and matt versions. In the pictures below, a glossy varnish has been used. You can add a few coats if you think it needs a little extra. Once the varnish has dried completely, your cernit bowl is ready to use:

Below we provide a quick guide on how to make the cernit effect with more colours, as used in the pictures above.

How to make colour effects with Cernit modelling clay:

Roll your colours into small sausages and put them together 2 by 2:

Then twist your 2 cernit sausages so that the colors are mixed together:

Then put the 2 sausages together and twist them together:

Bend the sausage in half and twist it again:

Then roll it into a long sausage. If you are already happy with the colours, you can also choose to stop here:

Otherwise, snap the sausage in half again and twist once more. Do this until you are happy with how much the colours have blended:

Then, as explained above, continue rolling/pressing your modeling clay flat and shaping it into a bowl in your desired shape.

If you have cernit modelling clay tools, you can even make small patterns in your bowls. You can also roll your modelling clay into a long sausage and twist it, like on the grey bowl below. The only limit is your imagination:
