With a hammer and the included tools, you can attach the snaps wherever on the fabric you want them. You will need the short metal rod and the plastic disc to make holes in your fabric. You insert the metal rod into the tool and place the disc under the fabric where you want a hole. Now place the metal rod where you want the hole to be and tap the tool with the hammer 3-4 times until there is a hole through the fabric.
